A journey to tombs of sages

Tiberias, one of the holy cities in Israel, has been for centuries an important spiritual Jewish center. This is where Jewish scholars acted, where the Sanhedrin sat, and where famous rabbis and sages were buried.

The many Tombs of Sages in city are evidence of its importance among the Jewish people. The landmarks are pilgrimage sites, crowded with visitors at all hours of the days.

In the areas surrounding Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee there are also many sites sacred to Christianity. The trip in the area is a special spiritual experience, which takes the visitors along historical paths.

The Tomb of Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes is up the mountain, close to Hamat Tiberias. A marking structure was built on top of the grave, divided into two sections – Ashkenazi and Sephardic. The site welcomes visitors during daytime.

The Tomb of Rabbi Haim Abulafia who was the founder of the Jewish settlement in Tiberias, is located at the city’s old cemetary, about 2km from Hamat Tiberias. Beside him are also the disciples of HaBaal Shem Tov.

The Tomb of Maimonides of the most influential jewish scholars is located in the city center, at the end of Yochanan ben Zakai Street. Near Maimonides’ tomb also lies his father Rabbi Maimon and his grandson Rabbi David HaNagid.

The Tomb of Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakhai, who served as the president of the Sanhedrin, is placed in the courtyard of the tomb of Maimonides. Beside him are also his students, Rabbi Elazar Ben Horkanos, Rabbi Yehoshua Ben Hananiah and the Amoraim  – Rabbi Emi, Rabbi Assi and Rabbi Yitzchak Nafcha.

The Tomb of Rabbi Akiva, one of the great sages of Israel, a supporter of the Bar Kochba revolt, and one of the ten martyrs, executed by the Roman empire. The tomb is located on the slopes of the “Mount of Almonds” south of the city, in the heart of a grove. The on-site cave is topped with marble panels carved with the story of Rabbi Akiva.

The Tomb of the Matriarchs  – located in Kiryat Shmuel, at the end of HaShomer street and is the burial place of Jocheved daughter of Levi, mother of Moses, Elisheva daughter of Aminadab, wife of High priest Aharon, Bilha and Zilpah, Zipporah wife of Moses and Abigail, one of King David’s wives.
